True love is for the birds.
I remember chatting with Kirsty last year, during a get-to-know-you call, talking about her wedding. Birds, she told me, are a big thing in her life. She and Josh are wildlife biologists, and birds brought them together.
If you’re into nature, Tofino is a pretty ideal place to get married. Josh & Kirsty chose the Beach House at Middle Beach Lodge, and their families gathered from literally all around the globe.
When you get married at the little private beach at MBL, the grand entrance is made from a luscious little trail through the woods, down to the sand. That moment of anticipation is my favourite; guests in their chairs, nervous groom at the altar, the sound of waves, the moment before you take your first step toward the rest of your life. It’s quintessential west coast, and it’s a moment you’ll look back on year after year.
^^^ This photo!!! The way he’s looking at her – you can tell that he’s just feeling like the luckiest guy in the world in that moment. And HER – vows can be hard to say, even in front of only your nearest and dearest. But Kirsty was READY – not a moment’s hesitation, just truth and sweetness and love.
Enter: the ringbearer.
And this photo! ^^^ That moment when you just married your person.
This group of guys was awesome. The best thing about them was that they agreed to do everything I suggested. They also looked GOOD. And they were good climbers. But I don’t think anyone in this group could compare to Kirsty in adventure and determination. This is the kind of bride I LIVE for.
Before you ask, these gorgeous lanterns (and all the florals) were done by Darcey at Wild Bloom Tofino. They were just too gorgeous, and smelled good to boot. If you get married out here, definitely get some eucalyptus added to your arrangements – then when the day is done, just keep them in the back seat of your car for an every-day reminder of your wedding. Life hack! (Bahahaha)
Middle Beach Lodge is nestled between Mackenzie Beach to the south and Middle Beach to the north. Mackenzie is a tourist favourite – it’s a small, gentle beach where you can let your kids run free and basically still see them from one end to the next. It features a number of resorts and campgrounds, and is bustling with activity most of the year. Middle Beach, by contrast, is frequently deserted. The only resort that overlooks Middle Beach, as you might guess, is MBL. It’s private and quiet and beautiful.
Which makes it ideal for photos!
Do you have a sister who came to Tofino from England and wrote you a poem for your wedding day? Kirsty does. Louise is a woman of many talents.
So, basically Kirsty looks like a supermodel. I can’t be sure whether or not she looks like a supermodel every day (I rarely get to meet my couples in real life before their wedding day), or if it’s just common in South Africa, where Kirsty is from, to look like a supermodel, or what. Here’s the thing though – her sister Louise, who came from afar and wrote her a beautiful poem, also did her hair and make up. WHAT? As a person who wears a toque for as much of the year as is reasonable (not to weddings though – don’t worry!), this truly impresses me. I love that her make up was classy and dramatic (this is right up my alley) and her hair was both whimsical and intricate.
Bird. We were walking along the beach when Kirsty spotted…
I could hav shot these two all day. But alas, wedding days aren’t all about the photographer (what?) so I had to give the couple up and let them re-join their families, who were enjoying some appies and champagne, and the beach.
Which brings us to…the reception.
Best things about Middle Beach Lodge receptions:
- the cliff
- the tent
- the beach house
- the intimate atmosphere
- the attention to detail (cred: Rare Earth Weddings)
- the memories you will make
The tent is really where things come together; it’s always a confluence of florals, west coast calm and the couples’ personal style.
Then the food comes out.
Who doesn’t like being fed? Kirsty and Josh’s day was catered by Lil Ronnie’s Backyard BBQ. At that time (this was August) I was about a month into my journey of switching to a plant-based diet…and I drooled. And I cheated on that diet (no regrets).
This was a day full of love and laughter and happiness. These two are so lucky – they were surrounded by people who love them, who had wonderful things to say about them, who wrote poems for them (there were two) and who were fully, happily in the spirit of celebrating the love of these two sweet people. What a perfect day.
The vendors who brought this all together include:

- Wild Bloom Tofino
- Rare Earth Weddings
- Folklore Films (AMAZING)
- Lil Ronnie’s Backyard BBQ
