We’ve intended to check out the crashed Canso in PRNPR for quite a while now, but admittedly hadn’t looked much into it beyond finding out how to get there. Retrospectively, I think I heard someone, at some point, say it was “muddy”, but whether or not that happened is debatable, and frankly pointless. We were unprepared this morning when we hopped in the truck with little more than the usual granola-bar-and-a-drink provisions, and two small children.
It was too muddy. Hobbes was the only one among us in gumboots, and we discovered early on that they are full of holes. We came home dirty and hungry and little tired.
It’s a beautiful hike though, as far as we got. I enjoyed the abandoned RCAF bunker – I like creepy abandoned places, and this one was not short on the unsettling factor. The trail from the highway is quite beautiful too. Prior to when the site was decommissioned, it would have been a functional road, and evidence of that still exists.
The worst part: the defeat. There will be victory, one day.
